- ACTs PAST LANDSCAPES WALK:
SWAMPY MEADOWS - SOLD OUT
About the walk
Come join Tony Barham, Geo-archaeologists from Navin Officer Heritage Consultants Pty Ltd, on a walk along the creek at Yarralumla to investigate how archaeologists use the current landscape to understand past environments. Tony will explore the once prominent landscape, Swampy Meadows which are marshy environments and disconnected “chain-of-ponds” habitats. These were prominent in the ACT prior to European occupation and were part of a rich and diverse ecosystem used by First Nation Australians. Swampy Meadows are now rare in the ACT as a result of stocking and clearing but can be seen in the soil profiles along the Yarralumla creek.
Tony will show how evidence of past landscapes are preserved in the valley floors and creek side deposits in the precinct. This analysis contributes to our knowledge of the past and how humans lived with the local environment. |
The walk along a track with some uneven terrain. There are gently sloping to moderately steep slopes.

About the walk
Come and join Dr Mary Hutchison (historian) and Dr Peter Dowling (historical archaeologist) on this walk to the little-known ruin of the former Old Lands End Homestead complex. The slab homestead was built in 1871 by Robert and Jane Kilby and named Lands End because it seemed to them miles from anywhere. Further additions were made as the years went by including a blacksmith workshop, a rammed earth dairy and more bedrooms as families expanded. The Kilby and Cameron families were to live there until 1925 when the present homestead on the corner of Drake Brockman and William Hovell Drives was built. The old house was demolished, and the slabs used to construct a shearing shed on the new site.
Mary and Peter will tell the story of the homestead and its families and how a history and archaeological investigation can piece together the remnants of the buildings and the lives of the people who lived there. |
The walk is a grade 3 category along a gravelled vehicle track with gently sloping to moderately steep slopes.
