What we doThe Canberra Archaeological Society formed in December 1963. Since then, the aims of the Society have been to foster public awareness and engagement in archaeology in the Canberra region. Membership has always been open to all who are interested in archaeology, not just archaeologists! Members are the first to know about CAS-run and affiliated events, and receive either free or heavily discounted attendance. We aim to run several tours, seminars or public archaeology events in the ACT region each year. Reports on some of our previous projects are available on our resources page. The annual CAS Grants support those undertaking research in archaeology or closely related fields, in topics with relevance to the Australian Capital Territory and region. Applications usually close in May of each year. Each year CAS collaborates with other local organisations to run the annual ACT and Region Heritage Symposium. CAS also runs events during National Archaeology Week and the Canberra and Regional Heritage Festival, organising public walks and symposia. Over the decades, CAS has advocated for the conservation and study of Indigenous and non-Indigenous archaeological sites and collections of artefacts in the ACT. We have provided comments to the Government of the archaeological heritage issues in various development areas. |

Canberra Archaeological Society is a 100% volunteer-run incorporated charity. The CAS constitution, committee meeting minutes and annual reports are available online.
CAS archives dating back to the early 1960s are available in hard copy at the ACT Heritage Library. Two of our valiant members sorted the chaos into order and compiled a list of the contents. Reports are on the open shelves and anyone can ask to access archived items.
Resources and publicationsCAS has been active in local archaeology projects for decades. Reports of our previous projects are collated here.
