Canberra Archaeological Society

CAS

The Canberra Archaeological Society was formed in 1963 to cater for the needs of all people interested in archaeology. We aim to promote and engage with our Canberra regional archaeology and archaeological community.
CAS run events for the public and our members throughout the year including:
  • Public lectures, symposiums, and Archaeology in the Pub.  Our monthly public lectures are held at the National Museum and the ANU, with guest speakers talking on a range of topics from Australian prehistory to historical archaeology and classical studies.
  • Fieldwork including excavating and recording, and site walks and tours.  No experience is necessary as training on the job is provided; enthusiasm is the only requirement and the aim is to enjoy the time in the field;
  • We collaborate with many different groups to run the annual ACT and Regional Australian Heritage Partnership Symposium and CAS contributes to National Archaeology Week and the Canberra Heritage Festival; and
  • CAS engages in educational workshops and site visits with local schools in the region, hoping to inspire the next generation of archaeologists in the Canberra community.

  • Members receive our monthly newsletters, and have free entry to our public lectures and other ticketed events. They also receive exclusive opportunities to develop their skills in excavation, recording, and report writing.
